Putechantuy Hillfort

Iron Age folk built this thing properly - Putechantuy Hillfort sits on high ground near Tarbert and gives you a real sense of what settlement looked like when Romans were still just a rumour down south. The ramparts are still visible, which is the main draw: you can walk the perimeter and see how they'd have positioned themselves defensively across the landscape. It's not dramatic ruins or anything - more like reading archaeology through earthworks - but if you're into how people actually lived two thousand years ago, it repays the climb. The view across Argyll from up there justifies the walk alone. Allow an hour to properly explore and get your bearings, maybe two if you're the type who wants to sit and imagine it all.Very much a walker's site rather than a push-the-buggy sort of place, though families with older kids who don't mind rambling about fields will manage fine. Free to visit and no gates to fight through. The nearest proper base is Tarbert, though you'd do well pairing this with Killegruer Caravan Site just 2.5 miles away - solid four-star spot for staying local. Muasdale Holiday Park is a touch further but worth considering if you're planning several days exploring the peninsula. Spring and autumn are best - you'll have decent light and fewer midges than summer throws at you. There's nothing commercial here, no café or facilities, so come prepared. It's low-key and genuine - the sort of place that teaches you something rather than just ticking a box.
