Purple Bee field

The Purple Bee field sits just outside Dornoch, a sprawling stretch of wildflower meadow that genuinely lives up to its name come summer. The bees are everywhere - you'll hear them before you see the reason why. It's a working agricultural space rather than a formal attraction, so there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, just open access to walk the perimeter and take in what amounts to a proper natural spectacle.

What makes it worth the detour from Dornoch is simple: the riot of purple wildflowers that blankets the field from June onwards. It's not Instagram-managed or fenced off. You get the real thing - a genuinely biodiverse patch that feels increasingly rare in the Scottish Highlands. Walkers and nature photographers gravitate here, and anyone with even a passing interest in pollinators will spend ages just watching the activity.

Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you're keen on spotting different bee species or waiting for decent light. It's free, obviously, and best visited on a calm day when you can actually hear the insects at work. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quietest.

If you're staying at either Dornoch Firth Caravan Park or Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park - both just down the road - this is an easy add-on to a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It won't occupy a full day, but it's the sort of thing that stays with you: a reminder of what Scottish farmland can still do when left alone.
