Pulborough Recreation Ground

The River Arun floods this stretch of Sussex wetland seasonally, and when it does, you're looking at proper birdwatching territory. Pulborough Recreation Ground isn't a manicured visitor attraction - it's a working nature reserve where the birds frankly couldn't care less about your presence, which is rather the point. Winter brings the biggest crowds of wigeon and teal; spring sees returning warblers. There's a network of paths threading through the grassland, some of them waterlogged depending on the season, so come prepared for mud regardless of what the weather forecast promises.

The reserve sits just outside Pulborough village, making it convenient if you're based at one of the local glamping spots like Wakestone & Wild Glamping or Goweco Glamping - both within a few miles. It's a solid half-day outing for keen birders and nature photographers rather than a casual family stroll, though kids interested in spotting water voles or kingfishers will find it genuinely absorbing.

Access appears to be free and there's no apparent admission gatehouse, just pull in and go. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about identifying species; an hour if you're after a quick riverside walk. Best visited in the quieter months - October through March sees the most significant bird populations. Spring can be lovely too, though the paths get busier and less meditative. The ground drains poorly, so waterproof boots aren't optional.
