Pry Hill

The walk up Pry Hill from Carnforth is deceptively straightforward until you're halfway there and realise you've underestimated the gradient. It's not massive - we're talking around 400 metres of ascent - but it comes on properly steep in sections, and the path can be boggy after rain. Worth it though. From the top you get proper views across the Lune Valley and down towards Morecambe Bay. On a clear day the Lake District fells cut a fine line on the horizon. This is honest Yorkshire moorland rather than dramatic mountain scenery. Short grass, bracken, the occasional sheep. No summit building or queue of people, which is refreshing.

The appeal here is straightforward: a solid two to three hour round trip from Carnforth that feels like a proper walk without demanding full fell-walker credentials. Families with teenagers who can handle a steep climb will get the most from it. Younger kids might find it a bit of a slog, particularly the last push to the summit. It's the kind of place where you genuinely feel you've earned your legs back.

Time it for late afternoon and you'll catch the light hitting the valley nicely. Avoid it immediately after heavy rain unless you're after the bog experience. If you're camping at Philpin Farm or Ribblesdale Pods - both excellent bases nearby - Pry Hill makes a proper morning or afternoon outing without eating your whole day. Walk it as part of a circuit rather than a straight up-and-down if you want to add distance.
