Prudhoe Castle

The moment you round the corner near Stocksfield and spot Prudhoe Castle rising above the Tyne Valley, you understand why the Normans planted it here. This isn't a showy fortress - it's practical, muscular, built to hold a border and it still looks like it means business.

You're walking around a 12th-century keep surrounded by later fortifications, all of it managed by English Heritage. The keep itself is the draw - proper thick walls, commanding views across the valley. You can climb up inside (a bit of a squeeze on the stairs, fair warning) and from the top the landscape opens out in all directions. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the walk up.

The outer bailey is spacious enough to wander, and there's something satisfying about tracing the line of the medieval defences even when they're reduced to grass and stone. Families with older kids will find enough here to keep them occupied for a couple of hours; younger ones might get restless after an hour. History enthusiasts will want the time to properly read the interpretive boards and sit with the views.

It's free to explore the grounds, though there's a charge to enter the keep - check the website for current opening hours and admission prices. The site works brilliantly as part of a wider Northumberland castle tour, and Valley View Camping & Glamping just down the road offers proper comfort if you're making it a longer stay. September and early October are best - busy enough for the site to feel alive, quiet enough to actually think.
