Proudy Hill

The walk up Proudy Hill isn't long, but it's properly rewarding once you're at the top. You get sweeping views across Northumberland's moorland - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people bang on about the North East. It's an accessible peak, which means you won't need specialist kit or half a day, but don't underestimate the final push: it's steeper than it looks from below.

The hill sits just outside Haltwhistle, making it ideal if you're based at the Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site nearby. Most walkers crack it in an hour or so, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to take photos. The views stretch for miles on a clear day - genuinely worth the effort. Family groups with reasonable fitness will manage it fine; younger kids might find the slope tedious on the way down, but nothing extreme.

Timing-wise, go early or late afternoon to avoid the flat midday light and catch better photos of the valley below. The exposure up top means weather matters - I'd skip it in mist or high wind. Admission is free, naturally, and there's no formal visitor facilities, so bring water and a packed snack if you're making an afternoon of it.

It's a solid addition to a Northumberland park stay, particularly if you want a proper walk without committing to a fell day. Pairs well with exploring Hadrian's Wall further south or the market town of Haltwhistle itself for supplies and a decent pub afterward.
