Progress stands as one of Yorkshire's most significant industrial monuments, a vast woollen mill complex that dominated Wakefield's manufacturing landscape throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Walking around the site is genuinely striking - the sheer scale of the red brick structures, the imposing chimneys, the railway sidings still visible underfoot - it all tells you exactly why this place mattered. The mill operated continuously for decades, employing hundreds of local workers who kept the Yorkshire wool trade ticking over.

History buffs will find plenty to absorb here. The architecture alone rewards a good look around; the Victorian industrial engineering is impressive whether or not you know anything about textiles. Families might find it less gripping than, say, a working museum - there's no reconstructed looms or costumed guides - but older kids interested in how things were made will get something out of a walk around the perimeter.

The site sits just a short drive from Wakefield town centre, making it easy to combine with other stops if you're basing yourself at nearby Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site. Allow an hour or so for a proper look around, longer if you're photographing the industrial details. Best visited on a clear day when the brickwork really shows itself off. Access and opening details can be patchy, so it's worth checking locally before you go - the Wakefield visitor information centre will have current information. Not somewhere you'll spend a whole afternoon, but absolutely worth the detour if you're interested in industrial heritage.
