Private fishing

The Doon Valley near Maybole holds some of Scotland's most productive private fishing waters, and if you can secure access through a local ghillie or estate contact, you're in for a proper treat. These stretches pull brown trout and the occasional salmon, depending on the season and water levels - summer can be hit or miss after dry spells, but autumn usually sees things picking up nicely.

You'll be wading through countryside that feels genuinely remote despite being only a few miles from town. The river itself winds through mixed woodland and moorland, and the fishing is the whole point here - there's no visitor centre or cafe, just you, the water, and the hope of a take. Most days you'd want three to four hours minimum to work a decent stretch properly.

This is absolutely for keen anglers rather than casual dabblers. If you've got a fly rod and know what you're doing, the Doon offers real potential. Families with young kids won't get much from it unless they're enthusiastic fishing types already.

Access is the tricky bit - it's private, so you'll need to arrange permission in advance through local estate contacts or through a fishing agent. Worth asking at Maybole when you arrive. It's a different kind of Ayrshire holiday - more solitary, more focused than park-hopping, but genuinely rewarding if angling's your thing.
