Princes Avenue Methodist Church

The red brick Victorian chapel on Princes Avenue doesn't announce itself loudly, but step inside and you'll understand why locals take it seriously. Built in the 1880s, this Methodist church is one of Beverley's finest surviving examples of non-conformist architecture - all soaring timber ceilings, stained glass, and that particular kind of sacred quiet that makes you drop your voice without thinking.

It's the sort of place history enthusiasts will linger over, tracing the craftsmanship in the decorative plasterwork and reading the plaques that track the church's life through generations. The Methodists who built this were doing something countercultural - rejecting the established Church of England in favour of a more direct faith - and the building itself feels like a quiet statement of conviction.

Access can be hit or miss outside service times, so ring ahead if you're keen to look inside properly. Even if you can't get in, the exterior is worth photographing, especially the ornate brick detailing. It's a five-minute walk from Beverley town centre, so easily paired with exploring the minster and high street.

If you're camping at Manor Farm or Butt Farm nearby, it's a decent half-day jaunt into town. You won't need more than an hour here, but combined with Beverley's other attractions - the market, the excellent bookshops, proper pubs - it slots perfectly into a park-based break. Not for everyone, but for anyone interested in how communities worshipped beyond the Anglican tradition, it's worth the detour.
