Prince of Wales Park

There's a proper working nature reserve just outside Shipley that most people driving past on the A650 completely miss. Prince of Wales Park sits quietly beside the River Aire, and it's the sort of place where you'll actually see something - herons fishing in the shallows, kingfishers if you're lucky, and enough wetland birds to keep binoculars busy for an hour or more.

It's managed as a genuine wildlife site rather than a manicured park, which means pathways wind through reed beds and around open water with minimal fuss. You won't find benches or ice cream vans. What you get instead is space, stillness, and the chance to watch nature doing its thing without crowds. Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground will find it rewarding; toddlers might get restless quickly unless you're serious about spotting birds.

The reserve works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Bronte Country Park, Woodsworth Exploring, or Upwood are all within five miles and make good bases for exploring the area. Allow a couple of hours maximum. Spring and autumn bring the best migrant birds; winter's decent for wildfowl. It's free to access, though there's virtually no information on-site, so bring a bird book or download an app beforehand.
