Priest Ridding Plantation

Priest Ridding Plantation sits just outside Kendal, a proper working forest rather than some manicured woodland walk. It's the kind of place where you'll actually see forestry happening - felled logs stacked high, the smell of fresh cut timber, and paths that change depending on what work's going on that week.

The plantation itself is mixed woodland, mostly conifers mixed with deciduous trees, and it works well for a couple of hours of walking if you're staying at Kendal Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby. The paths are decent enough, though they can be muddy even days after rain - proper fell country drainage. You won't find fancy signage or visitor facilities here; this is working land, not a visitor attraction with car parks and cafés.

Family groups get decent value if the kids are old enough for a real walk rather than a stroll. The forest is quiet, which some will love and others might find a bit dull compared to say, a proper mountain hike. History buffs won't find much - it's modern forestry, not ancient woodland - but if you're keen on seeing how British timber production works, it's genuinely interesting.

Free access as far as I could establish, though do check locally when you arrive in Kendal. Give yourself two to three hours maximum, especially if you're combining it with other walks in the Lake District. Go on a dry day if you can manage it.
