Preston Hill Nature Reserve

The chalk grassland at Preston Hill rolls out in proper waves, the kind of place where you'll spot chalk-loving plants you won't find anywhere else in England. It's a small reserve - maybe an hour's walk will cover most of it - but the views across the North Downs from up there are genuinely good.

Walkers get the most from this one. The slopes are steep enough to feel like proper exercise without requiring full mountaineering kit, and the grassy paths are well-trodden. Keen botanists will spend a happy couple of hours identifying rare wildflowers; kids often find the scrambling about on the hillside entertaining, though it's not exactly an adventure playground.

The reserve sits just outside Sevenoaks, making it a straightforward detour if you're staying at Thriftwood Country Park a few miles away. Both offer decent Kentish countryside without the theme-park chaos of busier attractions. Free access, obviously - it's a nature reserve, not a tourist trap.

Best visited in late spring or summer when the wildflowers are actually doing something interesting. Winter's bleak and a bit muddy; spring can be waterlogged. Allow a morning if you're the type to stop and identify things. If you just want a brisk walk and a view, ninety minutes will do it.

Worth fitting in if you're already in the area, though I wouldn't say it's worth a massive detour on its own. Pair it with a park stay and you've got a solid couple of days.
