About Preston Belt
What you're walking through is commercial forestry, mainly conifers, but the paths are well-maintained and the town's surprisingly far away once you're in amongst the trees. The main draw is the walking - there are decent trails cutting through, and on a decent day the light filters through in that particular way that makes you understand why people bother with Scottish woodland at all. It's not dramatic, nothing like the high moorland you get further south, but it works.
If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Southerness just down the road, this is genuine value for a half-morning ramble with the kids or a proper walk if you've got the energy. Dogs clearly love it here, and the accessibility is reasonable if you're not after anything too technical. The forest changes mood depending on season - dreich and atmospheric in winter, properly pleasant in summer.
It's free, naturally, and you can dedicate as little as forty minutes or push for a couple of hours. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth tacking onto a Dumfries visit if you've got time. Better than sitting in the town centre, anyway.
