Families with younger children won't be bored for too long, though there's nothing specifically laid on for them, so managing expectations helps.

The real strength is proximity to St Albans itself. If you're staying at Fuzzy's Farm - about six miles away - and you've done the cathedral and the town centre, this gives you an easy woodland break without driving hours. It's free and accessible from dawn to dusk, which keeps things simple. The ground can get proper muddy after rain, so waterproof boots matter more than the guidebooks suggest. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends pull more families and groups, which dulls the sense of actually being in a wood.
