Powson Knott

The summit of Powson Knott sits at 1,394 metres, making it a proper fell walk rather than a casual stroll. You're looking at a steep ascent from the Kendal area, but the views across the Lake District fells justify the effort - assuming the weather cooperates, which it often doesn't.

This is a hill for people who actually want to walk. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape. The approach from the south isn't overly technical, but it's relentless, so factor in two to three hours for the round trip depending on your fitness. Kids aged ten and up with decent stamina will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the gradient.

What you get for your effort is an expansive vista across the surrounding fells and, on clear days, views that stretch further than you'd expect. The fell itself is fairly exposed, so weather changes quickly - bring a waterproof. Free access, obviously, being a fell.

It's the sort of walk that feels like an accomplishment rather than a tick-box exercise. Not for everyone, but if you're comfortable with genuine fell walking, it delivers.
