Powdermill Reservoir

The walk down to Powdermill Reservoir catches you off guard - you're expecting a modest Sussex pond, but the water stretches out properly, ringed by trees and surprisingly peaceful given it's only a few miles from Battle. The path is well-trodden and reasonably flat, so it works for families who don't fancy anything too ambitious. Birdwatchers absolutely live for this spot. Great crested grebes, herons, various ducks - bring binoculars and you could spend a couple of hours just watching the water. Non-birding visitors might find it a bit quiet after thirty minutes, which is fair enough. It's one of those places that's more about the walk itself than a destination with facilities. There's nowhere to grab a coffee or ice cream once you're there, so pack a thermos if you're making an afternoon of it. The reservoir sits in proper countryside, so it feels properly remote even though Battle is just down the road. If you're staying at Beech Estate Campsite - which is solid and only five and a half miles away - this makes a cracking morning outing before breakfast at the campsite or a late afternoon stroll to kill time before supper. Seasonal visits matter here. Spring brings migrating birds and newts; autumn is quieter but the trees do lovely things. Winter can be muddy. Best time is probably late April through June when everything's active and the weather's behaving itself. Worth the detour if you're outdoorsy types; less compelling if you need something more structured.
