About POW Camp 18

The remains of a Second World War prisoner-of-war camp sit quietly on moorland just outside Haltwhistle, largely unmarked and utterly absorbing if you know what you're looking at. POW Camp 18 held Italian prisoners during the war, and what's left now are the foundations, scattered stones, and the weight of what happened here. You won't find much signage or visitor infrastructure - this is a walk-around-and-imagine kind of place, which some find brilliant and others find a bit frustrating.

Historyophiles and anyone interested in wartime Britain will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or polished - no reconstructions, no visitor centre. Just the bones of the camp and the moorland that swallowed it. Allow an hour to potter about properly, though you could cover it in twenty minutes if you're just passing through. There's no cost, which is just as well given the lack of facilities.

What makes it work as a stop is its proximity to the other sites around Haltwhistle. You could easily pair it with a visit to Hadrian's Wall, which runs nearby, and then base yourself at one of the local camping spots - Hadrian's Wall Campsite gets top marks and sits just 4.9 miles away. The Herding Hill Farm site, also excellent, is a touch further but worth it if you want something slightly more comfortable after a day of tramping about historic ruins. Winter's actually quite good for this one; you'll have the place to yourself.
