Postgate Cross

The cross itself is modest - weathered stone marking a spot on the moors between Whitby and the surrounding villages where Catholic priest Nicholas Postgate was executed in 1679. It's not dramatic, but the weight of what happened here lingers properly.

Postgate was hanged, drawn and quartered for the crime of being a Catholic priest during the Popish Plot hysteria. The cross marks where he died, and you can still feel the isolation of the spot - all open moorland and sky. It's not a visitor attraction with facilities or interpretation boards. You just stand there with the wind and the history.

This one's for walkers and history types rather than families after a day out. Whitby itself, just a few miles south, handles the crowds and the fish and chips. Out here it's properly quiet. Allow twenty minutes to visit, longer if you're the kind to sit with the location for a bit.

If you're staying at Northcliffe, Seaview, or Whitby Holiday Park - all within five miles - it's a good moorland walk to clear your head. The nearest proper settlement is Whitby, where everything else happens. The cross works best as part of a wider exploration of the moors rather than a standalone destination, but if you're interested in English religious history and martyrdom, it rewards the effort.
