Portsmouth Golf Club sits just outside Emsworth, a proper traditional course that's been around long enough to know what it's doing. The layout winds through mature trees and open fairways - nothing flashy, but solidly designed and well-maintained. You're looking at an 18-hole championship course that demands accuracy more than brute distance, with some testing par-4s that'll catch you out if you're not paying attention.

This is squarely for golfers. Serious ones, ideally. Non-golfers won't find much to occupy them here, and kids dragged along will be bored within twenty minutes. It's not a bucket-list course that justifies a pilgrimage on its own, but for anyone with a handicap staying at one of the nearby touring parks - Fishery Creek or ScottsHaven are both within six miles - it's a genuinely decent half-day. The club has the feel of somewhere locals actually want to play rather than somewhere tourist-ready.

You'll need to be a member or book well ahead as a visitor; ring ahead rather than just turning up. Membership details and visitor rates should be on their website, though getting hold of them can be bit of a faff. Allow a full morning or afternoon including the clubhouse. If you're based at Rookesbury Park or one of the other caravan sites in the area, this breaks up a holiday nicely without requiring a long drive. But only book it if golf actually matters to you.
