Porth Beach

You'll find Porth Beach just south of Truro, a proper stretch of sand backed by dunes and scrubland that feels pleasantly removed from the chaos of busier Cornish beaches. It's a nature reserve, which means the wildlife matters here - the plants, birds, and insects get priority, not the ice cream vans. That's either brilliant or a bit limiting depending on what you want from a day out.

The beach itself is decent enough for swimming and paddling when the tide's right, with pools forming in the rocks at low water. The real appeal though is the walk behind the dunes through the coastal heath. There are paths threading through gorse and heather where you genuinely might spot something interesting - adders are common on warm days, and the birdlife can be exceptional during migration seasons. If you're into that sort of thing, bring binoculars and a field guide. Families with young kids will manage the easier dune-edge routes fine, but don't expect a sprawling play area.

Give yourself an hour minimum for the beach itself, two if you're doing the longer heath walk. Spring and early summer are best - wildflowers are proper vibrant, and you'll avoid the summer crush. It's free, which helps justify the detour from Truro, and it pairs well with a stay at nearby Veryan Camping and Caravanning Club Site if you want coastal access without the resort atmosphere. Decent spot if you're after something a bit wilder than the usual family beach day.
