Portcullies Arch

There's a proper bit of medieval drama standing alone on the hillside near Balloch - Portcullies Arch, a solitary stone gateway that once formed part of a fortified structure. What you're looking at is essentially the business end of a castle entrance, that heavy iron grille mechanism rendered in stone. It's the sort of thing that stops you mid-walk and makes you think about how things were defended centuries ago.

The arch itself is modest in scale but weirdly commanding. You'll walk to it across open ground, which gives you time to work out what you're actually looking at - not a ruin exactly, more like a single historical punctuation mark in the landscape. History types will find it genuinely interesting; families with younger kids might find the walk worthwhile but the arch itself won't hold attention for long. Allow twenty minutes if you're passing through, longer if you're combining it with the Loch Lomond area.

This is excellent as part of a wider day out rather than a standalone trip. You're close to Lomond Woods Holiday Park and both Loch Lomond Retreat and Stoneymollan if you're staying in the area - all within five miles. The walk itself is straightforward, though the ground can be wet depending on weather. The real appeal is how it tells you something about medieval life on the edge of the Highlands, that constant need to defend and control entry. Worth the detour if you're exploring West Dunbartonshire properly, but don't expect crowds or facilities.
