Port of Poole Marina

The waterfront at Poole Marina is one of those places that works whether you're after a proper walk, a spot of lunch, or just watching boats. The marina itself is substantial - you've got everything from small sailing dinghies to proper cabin cruisers lined up along the quays, and the whole setup feels genuinely working rather than theme-park maritime.

What you're actually doing here is wandering. The pontoons have public access paths, so you can meander between the boats, watch people tinker with rigging, grab a coffee from one of the harbourside cafes. If you're into boats at all - and you don't need to be particularly - there's something oddly satisfying about being among them. The views back across Poole Harbour towards the Purbeck hills are decent too, especially on a clear day.

It's the sort of place families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes to an hour before restlessness kicks in, unless they're genuinely fascinated by vessels. Teenagers and adults who like waterfront wandering will happily spend longer here. The restaurants and bars dotted around mean you can stretch a visit out with a meal if you fancy it.

Staying at Rockley Park or South Lytchett Manor puts you within easy reach - both are just a couple of miles away - so it works as a morning or afternoon addition to a Dorset park holiday rather than a standalone day out. Free to walk around, though eating and drinking obviously costs.
