Port of Menteith

The little island church on the Loch of Menteith is one of those Scottish oddities that stops you dead. It's genuinely small - you're talking about a 15th-century kirk on an island called Inchmahome, reached by a short boat trip from the Port of Menteith jetty near Callander. The crossing itself is half the charm, really. You get proper views across the water to the Trossachs hills while the boatman ferries you across.

Once you're over there, it's quiet. Genuinely quiet. The church stands among trees with gravestones scattered about, and you can wander the grounds at your own pace. There's a burial aisle with some decent medieval stonework if you care about that sort of thing. The whole island feels removed from everything - no traffic noise, no crowds even in summer.

History types will get a kick out of it: Mary Queen of Scots hid here as a child, apparently. But honestly, the appeal is more about the atmosphere than any specific sight. Kids might find the boat ride entertaining, though they'll lose interest in the church itself after about fifteen minutes.

It's free to visit, though you'll pay for the boat. Allow an hour or so including the crossing. The surrounding area - Callander and the Trossachs - is strong for walking and family parks like Callander Woods and Keltie Bridge, so slot this in as a half-morning stop rather than a day trip on its own. Worth doing once, not worth obsessing over.
