Casual players won't find it particularly welcoming, and non-golfers will have absolutely nothing to do while their partner's out there for three and a half hours. Families with kids? Only if they play to a reasonable standard. The course demands respect - rough terrain, tricky greens, and wind that comes straight off the water.

Access requires membership or a visitor fee (ring ahead on their website for current rates), and you'll want to book in advance rather than just turning up. Allow a full day if you're travelling from the mainland - the ferry crossing from Dunoon takes about twenty minutes, so factor that into your journey time.

The walk into Port Bannatyne village afterwards is pleasant enough for a late lunch, though don't expect fine dining. Worth the trip for committed players; everyone else should probably spend their time elsewhere.
