Poors Wood

The walk through Poors Wood starts deceptively quiet. You'd expect something called a wood near Kenilworth to be either tiny or overrun with day-trippers, but this pocket of ancient forest manages neither. Paths wind through decent-sized trees - some genuinely old - with enough undergrowth to feel like actual woodland rather than a trimmed park. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward trails, none of which demand serious fitness but most benefit from decent boots after rain.

What you get depends entirely on the season. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Summer is thick and cool. Autumn turns it properly golden. Winter feels empty in the best way - you'll likely have the place to yourself. The wood sits on that sweet spot between established enough to feel substantial and small enough that you're not queuing at a car park.

This works best for a solid ramble rather than a destination in itself. Two hours maximum, unless you're really lingering. It's the sort of place to visit while basing yourself at Mousley House Farm or one of the other caravan parks within spitting distance of Kenilworth - adds a proper walk to what might otherwise be a day spent wandering the town or visiting the castle. Families with younger kids might find it a bit shapeless; teenagers and adults who actually enjoy forests will get something from it. Free to access, no facilities to speak of.
