Crackley Wood LNR

The woodland around Kenilworth isn't famous, which is precisely why Crackley Wood Local Nature Reserve works so well. You get proper woodland walking without the crowds, and the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust manages it properly - meaning the trails are maintained and you won't spend half the afternoon wondering if you've gone the wrong way.

It's ancient woodland, the sort of place where you notice things. Bluebells in spring are decent, and there's enough variation in the habitat to keep a naturalist entertained for a couple of hours. The walks are straightforward rather than challenging - nothing steep, nothing that demands special kit. Families with kids who can manage a couple of miles will find it suitable. Serious fell-walkers might find it a touch gentle.

What you're really doing here is stepping away from the Warwickshire tourist machine. Warwick Castle and the spa towns get the attention; Crackley Wood gets the peace and quiet. It's the sort of stop that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Broadwell Woods is just 1.5 miles away, and several others sit within five or six miles. A morning walk here, then lunch in Kenilworth town centre, breaks up a park holiday nicely.

Access appears free, though it's worth checking the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust website before you go - reserve hours can be variable. Allow two to three hours depending on your pace and how much birdwatching you do. Go on a weekday if you can; weekends bring more people.
