You're looking at local history spanning from Iron Age settlements through to the Victorian era - pottery, Roman finds, medieval bits - the sort of material that actually matters if you care about how this corner of Dorset developed. The standout for most visitors is the Tudor Room, which gives you a proper sense of what domestic life looked like 500 years back.

It works best for anyone with a genuine interest in local archaeology or regional history rather than casual droppers-in. Kids under ten will get restless within 45 minutes unless they're the type who genuinely engage with glass cases. Allow two hours if you're taking it seriously, rather less if you're just killing an afternoon.

The museum is free to enter, which is the main selling point if you're trying to fill a drizzly day. Head there mid-morning on a weekday to avoid school groups. Poole town centre has decent cafes nearby, so you can make a proper morning of it.

If you're staying at Haven Rockley Park or South Lytchett Manor a mile or two away, the museum makes a reasonable half-day trip alongside a walk around Poole Quay - genuinely more interesting than the museum itself, to be honest. The combination takes the edge off what's otherwise fairly static indoor time.
