Pondfield Copse

Walk through Pondfield Copse and you're stepping into proper old Surrey woodland - the sort of place where the trees have been standing for centuries and the paths wind through thick undergrowth without any faffing about. It's a working forest rather than a manicured park, which means you get the real thing: bluebells in spring, that smell of damp earth and rotting leaves, and the genuine quiet that comes when you're surrounded by nothing but trees.

The woodland offers decent trails for anyone after a proper country ramble, though it's not spectacularly dramatic - you won't find dramatic vistas or waterfalls. Dorking sits just to the east, which makes Pondfield a solid option if you're camping at any of the local sites like Riverside Farm or Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite. You can combine it with other walks in the area - the North Downs Way isn't far off - or make it a half-day woodland break between other attractions. It's free to visit, which helps when you're on holiday and watching the pennies.

Bring proper boots if it's been wet. The paths can get boggy and the undergrowth is thick enough that trainers won't cut it. Winter and early spring work well for walking without getting eaten alive by insects.
