Pond Copse

The woodland around Pond Copse is one of those places you stumble upon while walking near Godalming rather than deliberately seek out - which is exactly why it's worth knowing about. It's proper forest, the sort with actual undergrowth and birdsong rather than manicured paths, though that means it can feel a bit muddy after rain and the trails aren't always obvious.

You get decent woodland walking here, nothing too demanding, and the pond itself is a quiet spot to sit for five minutes. It's the kind of place where you might see nuthatches or woodpeckers if you're lucky, and the air smells like pine and damp earth. Kids will find it interesting for an hour or so - fallen logs to clamber over, the obligatory stick-hunting - but it's not a destination in itself.

From the glamping sites scattered around the area - Little Cowdray Farm is closest at under four miles - Pond Copse makes a solid half-day addition to a walking loop rather than a standalone trip. Layer it with a walk around Witley Common or head towards the Wey South Path and you've got a proper morning sorted. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring water and don't expect facilities. Go early on a weekday if you want it quiet. It's free access woodland, which is the main appeal - proper forest time without the entrance fee.
