Halnecker Copse

A thick belt of woodland just outside Godalming, Halnecker Copse is proper working forest rather than manicured parkland. The trees are old and dense, the paths wind through genuine Surrey countryside, and you won't find a visitor centre or gift shop in sight.

It's ideal for a solid walk if you're staying at Little Cowdray Farm Glamping or Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat nearby. The copse rewards a proper ramble - an hour minimum to feel like you've actually been somewhere, though you could easily stretch it to two if you take it slow and explore the quieter corners. The forest floor is interesting, especially after rain, and walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're the type who like turning over logs and searching for wildlife.

Historically, this is old Surrey woodland - the sort of place that's probably looked much the same for centuries. There's something grounding about that, even if there's no signage telling you so.

Go early in the morning if you can. Mid-afternoon on a weekend brings the local dog walkers out in force. The copse is free and always open - it's not fenced off or managed as a formal attraction. Parking is the main challenge; you'll need to find space on local roads rather than a dedicated car park. In winter the ground gets boggy in places, so decent boots matter. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point.
