Plumpton Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Hassocks, Plumpton Wood is the kind of place you'll stumble upon by accident and wonder why you hadn't visited before. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves, the canopy dense enough that you'll lose the sky for long stretches. It's a working woodland with management paths cutting through - nothing too manicured, but clear enough that you won't spend an hour going in circles.

The main draw here is sheer peace. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no stages for live entertainment. Just trees, birdsong, and the occasional flash of woodland wildlife if you're quiet. You'll spot the odd fellow rambler, particularly at weekends, but it never feels crowded. The paths vary in length depending on how adventurous you fancy being - some loop back to the main entrance within 20 minutes, others push deeper into the wood for a solid 90-minute trek.

Bringing children here works well if they're the type who'll engage with stick-hunting and spotting birds rather than demanding attractions. Teenagers often find it dull. For serious walkers and nature photographers, though, it's excellent - the light filtering through the canopy in autumn is genuinely special.

It's a straightforward stop if you're based at The Secret Campsite nearby. Free to access, no time limit. Go early on a weekday if you want solitude, or accept company on Saturday mornings. Worth the detour only if woodland walks genuinely appeal; it's not dramatic enough to justify travel from far afield.
