Plummet

The Conwy Valley's most dramatic waterfall, Plummet, isn't the sort of place you stumble upon by accident. You have to want to be here, and that's rather the point. The walk from Betws-y-Coed takes you through proper woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think - before the river starts making a proper fuss and the ground gets steep enough that you know something's about to happen.

When you round the final bend, there it is. The water drops sheer into a deep pool below, and the whole thing's rather theatrical. It's the kind of spot that makes you understand why the Victorians were so obsessed with waterfalls. The pool itself is deep enough to swim in during summer, though the water's cold enough to take your breath away. The surrounding rocks are slippery year-round, so watch your footing.

This is one for people who actually enjoy a walk, not those after a five-minute snapshot. Families with young kids might find the path a bit much, but older children who don't mind getting their boots muddy will have a good time. The whole trip takes two to three hours from Betws-y-Coed depending on your pace.

Stay nearby at Snowdonia Glamping Holidays or Maenan Abbey if you want to base yourself properly. The area's stuffed with walks, so treat Plummet as part of a wider day out rather than a standalone trip. Worth the detour if you're in the valley anyway; less so if it's your only reason for visiting.
