Plumbago Mines

The Plumbago Mines near Keswick feel like stepping into a proper industrial ghost story. This isn't some polished museum - it's the real deal, where you can actually see the old workings and get a sense of what life was like for miners scraping a living from Cumbrian rock.

What you're looking at are the remains of graphite (plumbago) extraction from centuries past. The site itself is fairly modest - weathered stone structures, overgrown shafts, and the kind of atmospheric landscape that appeals more to history buffs and industrial archaeology enthusiasts than casual visitors. You won't find crowds here, which is part of the charm.

Walkers get the most from this spot. It's not a standalone attraction you'd spend hours at, but rather something to incorporate into a day's hiking around the Lake District. The scenery surrounding it is proper Lake District - rolling fell and moorland - so the location matters as much as the site itself. Allow maybe 30 minutes to an hour to poke about and absorb the history, longer if you're the type to photograph every detail.
