Plessey Woods Country Park

The woodland walks at Plessey Woods are proper old-school Northumberland - ancient trees, a river that actually sounds like something, and the kind of quiet you don't get anywhere near a motorway. It's about four miles south of Morpeth, tucked into a valley where the Plessey Burn cuts through mixed woodland that's been here longer than most of us will be around.

You're looking at a network of trails rather than one circular route, which means you can do twenty minutes or a full afternoon depending on your mood and fitness level. The paths wind down to the burn and back up again - nothing brutal, but there are proper slopes in places. Families with younger kids will manage the easier loops without issue; walkers wanting a proper stretch will find enough here to keep them occupied. The woodland itself is the draw - sessile oak, birch, and enough bluebells in spring to make the trek worthwhile.

Free access, open all hours as far as I can tell, and about thirty minutes' drive from Tranwell Farm Holidays or Sandy Bay Holiday Park if you're basing yourself nearby. It's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning visit. Go late afternoon and you'll share the trails with half the county on their constitutional. Definitely worth incorporating into a wider park holiday in the area - it's too good to miss, but realistic enough that you won't feel short-changed if the weather turns.
