Pleassey Woods Country Park

The car park at Pleassey Woods fills up quickly on weekends, which tells you something about the place. It's a proper working woodland - mix of conifers and broadleaves - with marked paths that loop through without feeling like they've been over-sanitised. You can knock out a gentle walk, settle down for an afternoon picnic, or let the kids run about without them vanishing into the trees completely.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths are straightforward enough that you're not checking your phone every five minutes, but varied enough to justify coming back seasonally. Spring brings wildflowers, autumn gives you the colours. The actual terrain is soft underfoot - mostly mulch and leaf litter - so it's easy going rather than a proper hike.

Family groups work well here too, especially those with younger kids who'd lose patience with a long moorland trek. There's room to spread out a blanket without sitting elbow-to-elbow with strangers. Bring a flask and a proper sandwich rather than expecting anything beyond the car park.

If you're based at Tranwell Farm Holidays or Sandy Bay over near the coast, Pleassey Woods sits close enough to Morpeth for a half-day outing without eating into your schedule. It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied all day, but as part of a wider Northumberland park circuit, it's well worth the detour. Free to visit, as far as I can tell - just turn up and get on with it.
