The old pit heads and mining infrastructure still stand as reminders of what this corner of Nottinghamshire once was, but these days it's the wildlife and walking trails that draw people in. You'll find yourself wandering through woodland with proper character, past open grassland where birds actually seem to congregate rather than scatter. The paths are well-maintained and reasonably easy underfoot, which matters when you're trying to keep kids interested without burning them out.

The reserve works brilliantly as a half-day outing from any of the nearby holiday parks - Silverhill Woodland Retreats sits just 2.4 miles away, and it's the sort of place where a couple of hours exploring will feel substantial rather than rushed. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing; the wetland areas attract more waterfowl than you'd expect given the post-industrial setting. Dog walkers will find it accommodating too, though stick to the marked paths.
