You can easily spend two hours picking your way through without feeling rushed, though an hour gets you around the main loop. Birdwatchers and wildlife photographers are catered for - early morning visits reward you with decent sightings, especially in spring and autumn migration seasons.

Families with older kids or keen naturalists will get more from it than toddler-pushchair crowds. The paths aren't all flat, and there's limited facilities, so go prepared. Dogs are usually welcome on nature reserves, though check locally as rules vary.

Bow Hill Farm caravan site sits just six miles away, making this a solid add-on if you're basing yourselves in the area for a longer stay. You could easily combine it with walks around Chichester Harbour or days at other Sussex parks. Free to visit as far as I can tell - arrive early for parking and bring binoculars. The light's best in late afternoon, though midday can be quieter if solitude matters to you.
