Plas-Gwyn

The walk up Plas-Gwyn rewards you with views across the Cheshire Plain and well into Wales proper. It's a proper fell rather than a mountain - you're looking at around 1,000 feet - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. The terrain gets steep toward the summit and the final push involves a bit of scrambling through gorse and bracken. On a clear day the vista opens right up: you can see the Dee estuary toward Chester and the Welsh hills rolling away inland. It takes most people 45 minutes to an hour to get up there, depending on fitness.

This one's for walkers who want a proper outing without committing to a full day's hike. Families with older children will manage fine, but toddlers will struggle with the gradient. You'll want decent boots - it gets muddy and loose underfoot after rain. There's a small car park at the base, though it's not enormous, so go early if you're visiting on a weekend.

From either Honeypot Hideaways or Willow Farm Glamping - both just under 6 miles away - you could easily knock this out as a morning walk before returning for lunch. The proximity to Chester means you could string together a proper day out: walk the peak, head into the town for food and wandering about, then back to your glamping pod by evening. It's the sort of climb that feels satisfying without eating up your whole holiday.
