Plain-an-Gwarry

There's something properly striking about standing in the middle of a Bronze Age stone circle on a Cornish hillside, and Plain-an-Gwarry delivers exactly that. This is one of Cornwall's lesser-known prehistoric sites - a ring of standing stones that's been here since roughly 1500 BC, doing what stone circles do best: making you feel very small and very connected to something ancient.

The site sits on open moorland near Penzance, which means you get genuine windswept drama rather than a manicured heritage experience. The stones themselves aren't massive - nothing like Stonehenge - but there's an honesty to that. This is what Bronze Age people actually built in their corner of Cornwall, and it's survived three and a half thousand years of Cornish weather. You can walk the full circle in about fifteen minutes, which sounds brief until you factor in the photographs, the thinking time, and the very real possibility you'll just stand there for a while taking it in.

It's free and accessible year-round, making it ideal for a quick detour if you're staying at Roselands or Lands End Camping. Best visited on a clearer day - moorland mist can be atmospheric but it does rob you of the views. History enthusiasts and walkers will get the most from it; young children might need coaxing away from the car. Allow an hour if you're taking your time, half that if you're just ticking it off.
