Crowns Mine

The remains of Crowns Mine sit on the Cornish coastline near Penzance like a monument to the region's mining heyday. The site itself is relatively compact, and you can wander around the perimeter in under an hour, though if you're the sort who likes reading every placard and contemplating the engineering, you'll easily stretch to ninety minutes. The real pull here is the drama of the setting. These aren't neat, sanitised heritage attractions - they're genuinely crumbling structures with views that'll stop you mid-step. History buffs and industrial archaeology types will find it absorbing; families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before the novelty wears thin. The whole thing is free to access and there's no formal opening hours that I could find - you just turn up, which is rather lovely actually. It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at Roselands Caravan Camping Park (only 2.6 miles away) or Lands End Camping & Glamping if you're after something more upmarket. Pair it with a proper walk along the coast path and you've got half your day sorted. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't expect visitor facilities.
