Plaice

Plaice is Beverley's contemporary art gallery, housed in a converted Victorian building that manages to feel both industrial and intimate. The moment you walk in, you're struck by the high ceilings and exposed brick - they've kept the bones of the old space and built something genuinely interesting around them.

The gallery rotates exhibitions fairly regularly, so there's rarely a reason to visit twice in quick succession if you're just passing through. That said, the quality is consistently solid - they lean towards emerging artists and experimental work rather than safe, crowd-pleasing stuff. If you're the sort of person who actually reads the artist statements and thinks about what you're looking at, you'll get something from Plaice. If you're hoping for a quick cultural tick-box before heading to the pub, you might find it a bit demands-too-much for its size.

It's free to get in, which takes the pressure off completely. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here depending on what's on and how deep you go. It works well as part of a wider Beverley afternoon - the town has plenty to see, and Plaice fits neatly into that picture without feeling essential.

If you're based at Manor Farm Camping nearby, it's easily accessible for an hour's cultural break between proper outdoor time. Worth a look if you're in town anyway, but don't make a special trip unless the current exhibition really speaks to you.
