Place at which the Standard of Rebellion was erected A.D.1715

You won't find much here to photograph - just a modest stone marker on the road between Ballater and Braemar where the Jacobite Standard was raised in 1715. It's a sobering spot, actually. This is where the rebellion began, where clan chiefs gathered to declare their support for the Stuart claim. The monument itself is straightforward, but the history burns through it.

History enthusiasts will find this proper significant. You're standing at the exact point where everything kicked off, which is rare enough. The Jacobite cause matters to people in these parts still - not in a revolutionary way anymore, but there's real cultural weight to it. The landscape around here tells you why they chose this spot: high ground, visibility, defensible terrain.

The practical bit: it's free, it's there 24/7, and you need about 10 minutes if you're just stopping by the stone. Add another 20 if you actually want to stand there and think about what happened. The nearest proper facilities are in Ballater, which is barely a mile away - a pleasant wee town with shops and cafes.

If you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park, this is barely a detour. Combine it with a walk up into the hills or a drive deeper into Royal Deeside. On its own it's not a destination, but alongside Braemar Castle or the wider Highland scenery, it slots in nicely. Winter's atmospheric here, though the road can be tricky. Spring or autumn are your best bets.
