The Inver Stone

A weathered slab of granite stands alone on the moorland near Ballater, and that's basically it - but somehow it works. The Inver Stone marks an old boundary stone from centuries back, the sort of thing that would've mattered enormously to shepherds and landowners who actually lived up here. You won't need more than ten minutes unless you're the type who sits and contemplates rocks for an hour.

There's something satisfying about these genuine historical markers that haven't been dressed up with interpretation boards or visitor facilities. You see the thing, you read whatever history appeals to you, you move on. It's proper Scottish Highlands stuff - windswept, minimal, utterly unpretentious.

Walkers using this area will stumble across it naturally enough if you're exploring the moorland between Ballater and Braemar. Families with very young children won't get much from it, but if your kids are old enough to understand that boundary stones once meant something real, they might find it interesting. Photography types will appreciate the landscape more than the stone itself.

If you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park just down the road, it's a decent excuse for a short wander when the weather's decent. Don't make a special trip from elsewhere - save your energy for the proper walks in the area. But if you're already out exploring the moorland, acknowledge it. It's earned that much.
