Pixie's Mound

A modest earthwork on the Somerset Levels near Bridgwater, Pixie's Mound is one of those archaeological sites that rewards curiosity more than it punches you in the face. It's a Bronze Age barrow - essentially a burial mound - and what you're looking at is the surviving remains of something built around 3,500 years ago. The mound itself sits in open countryside, and while it won't take your breath away visually, there's something quite moving about standing on ground where Neolithic people once buried their dead.

This is properly for the archaeologically minded or serious local history walkers. If you're expecting dramatic ruins or elaborate interpretation boards, you'll be disappointed. What you get is a low earthwork in a field and the chance to think about deep time. Kids under ten will almost certainly get bored within five minutes. Walkers doing a circuit of the Levels, though, might well find it worth a detour.

There's no visitor facility or cafe - it's free, unfenced, and accessible during daylight. Allow half an hour if you're making a trip of it, longer if you're combining it with a walk. The site works best as part of a wider exploration of Somerset's archaeological landscape rather than a standalone visit.
