Pitter's Wood

The woodland around Pitter's Wood near Chippenham is proper walking territory - thick with beech and oak, the kind of place where you can lose an hour without noticing. It's not a formal attraction with gates and a visitor centre, just genuine forest that locals actually use, which is partly why it works so well.

What you get here is straightforward: decent footpaths threading through mature trees, the occasional clearing where light actually reaches the ground, and enough distance to feel properly away from things despite being within striking distance of town. Dog walkers seem to run the place, and that tells you something about accessibility. Most people will spend 45 minutes to an hour here depending on which paths they take - it's not a full day's undertaking, but it slots in nicely alongside other bits of the North Wiltshire countryside.

Historians won't find much to grab onto beyond the wood itself, but families with younger children appreciate it because there's room to move without feeling hemmed in, and the terrain isn't punishing. Proper walkers might find it a touch tame, but that's the point - it's low-intensity woodland, exactly what you need between more strenuous days.

Being barely five miles from Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site and close to Roe Deer Fields and The Moors Campsite, it works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere or an evening stretch when you're already pitched up locally. Access appears free and unrestricted, though there's nothing official about that. Go early to avoid the dog-walking crowds.
