Pitcastle Lochs (West)

Two lochs separated by a narrow strip of land - that's Pitcastle, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The western loch is the draw here, a proper quiet water that sits in rolling Perthshire countryside just outside Pitlochry. You won't find crowds or facilities, which is either the whole point or a letdown depending on what you're after.

It's a walker's spot, mainly. The banks are accessible enough for a gentle circuit, and the views across the water toward the surrounding hills are the kind that make you understand why people choose this corner of Scotland. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the lochs attract waterfowl, and it's peaceful enough that you might actually spot something. Families with young kids will find the walk manageable but unremarkable; it's not a destination in itself so much as a pleasant detour on a longer ramble.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I could find - no cafe, no car park in the formal sense, no entry fee to worry about. Which keeps it authentic but means you need to be self-sufficient. Best visited on a clear day when the light actually does something with the water rather than turning it grey.

If you're based at one of the nearby sites - Faskally Woods or Grandtully Station are closest - Pitcastle makes a solid morning walk before heading into Pitlochry for lunch. Don't go expecting drama. It's understated, which suits it.
