Lochan Chuir

The water here is so still you'll see the hills reflected perfectly - until a breeze catches it and everything ripples. Lochan Chuir is a small loch just outside Pitlochry, the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. It's not dramatic or showy. No café, no visitor centre, just trees, water, and the Perthshire landscape doing what it does best.

Walkers will find it worthwhile. The loch sits at the end of a decent ramble through woodland, and the whole circuit takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace. It's the kind of walk where you actually notice things - birdsong, lichen on the rocks, the way light filters through the trees. Families with younger kids might find the walk a bit of a slog to the payoff, but teenagers and anyone who enjoys a proper forest walk will get proper value from it.

Access appears to be free and open year-round, though there's no formal facilities to speak of. Come in spring when the undergrowth is fresh, or autumn when the light's that particular golden colour. Summer works fine too, but you might encounter more midges.

If you're staying at Faskally Woods or Grandtully Station, both within a couple of miles, this makes an excellent half-day outing. It pairs well with time at Pitlochry's other attractions without feeling like you're ticking boxes. The walk itself is the point here - the destination is just confirmation you've gone the right way.
