Pitarris Hill

The walk up Pitarris Hill takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the views across Aberdeenshire make every step worthwhile. It's not a dramatic summit - the landscape here rolls rather than towers - but that's rather the point. You get proper Highland scenery without the scrambling, which means families with younger legs can manage it without complaints.

From the top you're looking out over a patchwork of moorland and farmland, with Arbroath visible down towards the coast on clear days. The path itself is straightforward enough, though it can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. Spring and early summer are cracking times to go - the light stays late and the midges haven't arrived in full force yet.

This isn't a destination you'd plan a holiday around on its own, but it slots nicely into a wider exploration of the area. If you're based at The Grange Glamping just a few miles away, it makes for a satisfying half-day outing that won't exhaust anyone. The walk suits people who want fresh air and a bit of exercise without technical difficulty or scrambling. Older walkers and keen photographers do well here too - the light on the moorland is genuinely lovely in late afternoon.

There's no visitor facility at the summit itself, so bring water and something to eat if you plan to linger. Admission is free, naturally - it's an open hill. Allow two to three hours if you want to sit at the top for a bit rather than just bagging the peak and heading back down.
