Pineytote

A proper woodland walk rather than a managed attraction, Pineytote is the sort of place you stumble upon while exploring Sussex's quieter corners near Pulborough. The forest offers straightforward paths through dense pine and mixed woodland - good for clearing your head if nothing else. You're looking at anything from a quick 20-minute mooch to a longer couple of hours depending on which way you fancy going and how often you stop to listen to the birds.

It's best suited to walkers who don't need café facilities or visitor centres to enjoy themselves. If your kids are past the toddler stage and can handle uneven ground, they'll get something out of it. The woodland floor is typical forest stuff - roots, damp patches, the odd muddy bit - so proper footwear matters.

Free to access, which is always worth knowing. No facilities that we could find, so bring water if you're making a proper day of it. Spring's lovely when the woodland floor comes alive, but honestly any time when it hasn't been raining for three days straight works fine.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby camping spots - Washington Caravan Park is closest at under three miles - this makes an easy morning or afternoon leg-stretch. It won't replace a trip to somewhere like Knepp Wildland Safaris for a full-on nature experience, but as a no-fuss woodland walk from your caravan or glamping pod, it does the job.
