Worthing Crematorium

Don't let the name put you off - this isn't what you might expect. Set in the rolling countryside near Pulborough, this nature reserve has reclaimed former crematorium grounds into something rather special for wildlife watchers. The memorial gardens have evolved into a peaceful spot where grassland meets woodland, attracting a decent variety of birds and butterflies.

Walkers will find gentle paths threading through the site, though it's not enormous - you could easily cover the whole area in an hour or so. Families might find it a bit quiet for restless kids, but it's perfect for a contemplative stroll if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like South Downs Caravan Park. The memorial aspect adds a reflective quality that some visitors appreciate, others might find subdued.

Being close to the South Downs, you're well placed to combine this with longer walks into the surrounding countryside. The reserve works best as a short detour rather than a main destination - lovely for stretching legs between other activities, but probably won't fill a whole afternoon unless you're particularly keen on peaceful spots for wildlife observation.
